Solutions for Moving Twice
Selling your home is a good thing, but you might need to be out of the home before your new home is finished. If this is the case, don’t panic, we have you covered with some handy tips.
When you follow our advice, you’ll be able to make the transition as smooth as possible each time you move.
Find a Furnished Rental Unit
Look carefully at all of your short-term rental options. Most likely, you’ll only be in this place for a few months at the most, and some people only need another place to stay for a few weeks. Though they might cost a bit more, furnished rental units are by far the best way to go. This way, you’re not completely moving everything more than once.
Once you’ve decided where you’ll stay, it’s important to make a note of what’s included in the furnished place. Does it include kitchen wares like a coffee maker, pots and pans, dishes, and silverware? Does it have bed linens and towels in the bathrooms? Cleaning supplies like brooms and vacuums? Knowing these things will later help you decide which of your belongings you need to bring with you.
Look for Temporary Storage
You’ll need storage space for the things you won’t be bringing to your temporary housing unit. Sometimes, moving companies have a program where they’ll store your belongings for a few weeks at a time. If that’s all you need, it’s probably a good solution. Another possibility is to rent a storage unit in town. In this case, you usually have to transport your things to the storage unit, which may require you to rent a truck.
Pod storage units can be a real time-saver. The storage company drops off a shed-like container on your front lawn. You fill it up with your furniture and other things, and they pick it up and put it in storage. There are a ton of storage pods in Edmonton, so you have options! When you’re ready to move into your new home, they bring it to the new place, where you’re able to unload it yourself.

Separate Short-Term Needs from Your Belongings
The key to reducing stress is only bringing the things that you’ll need to the temporary place. If you’re heading into temporary housing during the winter, you’re certainly not going to need your summer clothes. Pack them up and put them in storage. The same goes for anything else you might not need, which is why it’s so important to have an accurate list of what’s available at your rental unit.
This shouldn’t feel like a big sacrifice, though. For instance, if you really love using your espresso maker each morning, you should take it with you even if the rental has a drip coffee maker. Basically, you only want to bring the things that you’ll actually use.
Categorize Your Boxes
This is a good tip for anyone planning a move, but it’s absolutely essential for those who are moving twice. You’re going to be putting a large portion of the things that you own in storage, and you want to be able to easily separate things once you finally get into your new home. The easiest way to do this is by categorizing the boxes and keeping lists of what’s inside each box. Some people do this by using different coloured tape for each room – red for the kitchen, blue for the living room, etc. Others simply clearly label the boxes on all sides to make it visible where the boxes need to go. No matter which method you choose, the organization is going to be helpful.
Pack and Get Things Out of the Way
Packing can certainly feel overwhelming, and it’s best to tackle it as soon as possible. Anything that you know you won’t need for the time being should immediately go into a box. Once you have the boxes, get them out of your way.
This is where putting things into a pod storage unit comes in handy. You can get the boxes out of your home as you go, so it’s easier to see how much you have left to do. An alternative for those who aren’t using pods is to let the boxes take over the dining room or another room that’s not used often. It will then be easier to move them once the movers get there.
Moving into temporary housing is sometimes necessary when you’re building a new home. A little bit of extra planning will help with the transition.
